Spring lawn prep: what to do in September

September is the launchpad for a great spring and summer lawn. The soil is warming, growth is accelerating, and what you do this month sets the tone for months to come.

Week 1: Clear and De-Thatch

Start by removing dead material and thatch.

  • Rake vigorously to pull out dead grass and leaf litter
  • Use a dethatcher or stiff rake to remove the brown layer of dead material
  • Don't be gentle — the goal is bare soil showing underneath
  • Collect and compost the debris

This looks aggressive, but it opens up the soil and removes harbourage for pests and disease.

Week 2: Feed and Aerate

Once the thatch is cleared, the soil is ready to breathe.

  • Apply a slow-release spring lawn fertiliser (high nitrogen for growth, lower potassium)
  • Aerate the lawn (spike it) if the soil is compacted — this improves root penetration
  • Water in the fertiliser

If your soil is very hard or you have heavy foot traffic areas, hire an aerator. It makes a huge difference.

Week 3: Overseed and Mulch

Overseeding thickens your lawn and fills in weak patches.

  • Scatter seed over the entire lawn (or just problem areas)
  • Use a seed that matches your existing grass type
  • Lightly rake the seed into contact with soil
  • Apply a thin layer of seed-raising mix or washed sand
  • Water daily for 3 weeks until the new grass is established

Keep foot traffic off the newly seeded areas.

Additional September Tasks

Weed control: Spring is when weeds germinate. If you have a problem, apply a selective herbicide (kills weeds, not grass) in early September before the weeds are established.

Mowing: Raise your mower height to 5–6cm in spring. Taller grass shades out weeds and has deeper roots.

Water: As it warms, increase watering. Weekly deep watering is better than frequent shallow watering.

The Long-Term Benefit

A lawn prepped properly in September will:

  • Be thicker and denser by December
  • Handle summer stress better
  • Need less water
  • Resist weeds naturally
  • Look greener and healthier

Quick-Start Version

No time for all this? Do at least:

  1. Rake out dead material
  2. Apply fertiliser
  3. Water in

Even those three steps will help.

The Reality Check

A spring prep takes a weekend of work. It saves you months of trying to fix a struggling lawn. Worth it.

If this sounds like too much, that's exactly when a maintenance plan makes sense. Our team does this work and it becomes routine.

September is your opportunity. Use it.
